We're here to help you make the right choice
Dr Susan O’Mahony is a Specialist Aesthetic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, and a Paediatric Craniofacial Surgeon based in Brisbane. She understands that consulting a Medical Specialist can sometimes be a daunting prospect, and she maintains a welcoming, caring and approachable atmosphere in her practice.
With extensive training and experience across reconstructive, cosmetic, and paediatric plastic surgery, Dr O’Mahony brings a comprehensive approach to patient care.
This procedure may be suitable for you if you’re experiencing significant discomfort or problems related to large breasts, such as persistent neck, back, or shoulder pain; skin irritation or rashes; difficulty finding well-fitting bras and clothing; or limitations in your ability to exercise comfortably.
To be a suitable candidate, you should be in good general health.
Dr O’Mahony does not perform breast reduction surgery on smokers or patients who are significantly overweight, as these factors increase the risk of complications.
She encourages women to be as close as possible to their ideal weight before surgery, while understanding that large, heavy breasts can make it very difficult to exercise effectively, which can be a barrier to weight loss.
Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthetic in a hospital setting.
Most patients stay in hospital for one night following the procedure to ensure a comfortable recovery.
Dr O’Mahony will discuss all aspects of the procedure with you during your consultation, ensuring you feel completely informed before making any decisions.
Most women need to take 2-3 weeks off work to allow for proper healing.
During this time, you’ll need to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities.
Dr O’Mahony and her team will provide you with detailed recovery instructions and will see you for follow-up appointments to monitor your healing.
What problems can large breasts cause?
Many women with large breasts experience a range of physical and practical difficulties.
These can include persistent pain in the neck, back, and shoulders; indentations from bra straps; skin rashes and fungal infections, especially in warm weather; difficulty finding bras and clothing that fit well; inability to exercise comfortably; and social discomfort or self-consciousness.
For many women, breast reduction surgery can make a significant positive difference to their daily life and wellbeing.
Health fund coverage
Breast reduction is considered a medically necessary procedure rather than purely cosmetic, which means Medicare and private health funds may provide some coverage for the surgery.
However, it’s important to understand that most health funds will not cover the entire cost of the procedure.
Dr O’Mahony’s office can provide you with a detailed quote after your consultation, which will help you understand what costs may be covered and what your out-of-pocket expenses might be.
