What is a facelift and neck lift?

A facelift repositions the deeper tissues of the face and redrapes the skin. A neck lift treats looseness under the chin and in the neck. The two are often planned together so the jawline and neck are treated as one area.

The operation does not stop ageing, and it is not a treatment for skin texture, pigment, or fine lines on their own. Dr O’Mahony will explain what surgery can change and what it will not.

This surgery may be suitable if looseness of the face or neck is your main concern and you are in good general health.

It is not suitable for everyone. Smoking and some medical conditions increase the risk of problems with healing. Dr O’Mahony will examine you and talk through whether an operation is appropriate.

Surgery is done in hospital, usually under general anaesthetic. Incisions are placed in natural creases and around the ear so they can be concealed in the hairline and the contours of the ear.

The exact operation depends on whether the face, the neck, or both are being treated. Dr O’Mahony will show you the planned scar pattern and discuss the operation before you decide.

Bruising and swelling are expected and settle over the following weeks. Most people need time away from work and from social events while this resolves.

When you can drive, exercise, and return to your usual routine depends on the extent of the surgery. Dr O’Mahony will give you instructions for your own recovery.

Facelift and neck lift surgery is usually cosmetic. Medicare and health funds do not normally rebate cosmetic facial surgery.
