What is a brachioplasty?

Brachioplasty removes loose skin from the upper arm and reshapes the remaining tissue. The scar is usually placed along the inner arm, between the armpit and the elbow. In some people it can be limited to the armpit if only a small amount of skin needs to be removed.

Dr O’Mahony will show you where your scar would sit and talk about how visible it may be.

This procedure may be suitable if excess skin of the upper arms is affecting your comfort or the way clothes fit, your weight is stable, and you are in good general health.

It is not a weight-loss operation, and it is not a treatment for a small amount of fat in an arm with tight skin. Liposuction alone is sometimes more appropriate. Dr O’Mahony will advise you after examining you. She does not recommend this surgery for people who smoke.

Surgery is performed under general anaesthetic in hospital. The amount of skin removed, and the length of the scar, depend on how much looseness there is.

Dr O’Mahony will explain the operation and the scar before you decide to proceed.

The arms are swollen and tender at first, and you will need to limit lifting while the wounds heal.

A support garment is often worn for several weeks. Dr O’Mahony will tell you when you can drive, return to work, and exercise.

Whether Medicare or your health fund contributes depends on your circumstances and on whether the surgery is considered medically necessary. Cosmetic surgery is not rebated.

After your consultation, Dr O’Mahony’s office will provide a written quote, including any relevant Medicare item numbers.
