What is a circumferential abdominoplasty?

An abdominoplasty treats the front of the abdomen. A circumferential abdominoplasty continues that surgery around the waist, so excess skin can also be removed from the hips and lower back.

It is a larger operation than a standard abdominoplasty. The scar sits around the trunk, where it can be placed beneath underwear or swimwear. Dr O’Mahony will discuss the scar and whether this procedure is suitable for you.

This procedure may be suitable if you have excess skin around the trunk after significant weight loss, your weight is stable, and you are in good general health.

It is not a weight-loss operation. The best time to consider it is once your weight has settled. Dr O’Mahony does not recommend this surgery for people who smoke, because of the risk to wound healing.

The operation is performed under general anaesthetic in hospital, and you should expect a hospital stay.

Excess skin is removed from the abdomen, hips, and lower back, and the remaining skin is lifted. Where there is separation of the abdominal muscles, this can be repaired at the same time.

Dr O’Mahony will explain the operation, the position of the scar, and what recovery involves before you proceed.

Recovery takes longer than after a smaller abdominal operation. You will need help at home in the early period, and time away from work, driving, and exercise.

Dr O’Mahony will give you a plan for dressings, your support garment, and when you can return to your usual activities.

Whether Medicare or your health fund contributes depends on your circumstances and on whether the surgery is considered medically necessary. Cosmetic surgery is not rebated.

After your consultation, Dr O’Mahony’s office will provide a written quote, including any relevant Medicare item numbers.
